The Challenge

On August 25th, 2008, a team from Southeastern Wisconsin will venture north to Canada to ride their bicycles 105 miles through the rugged and majestic Canadian Rockies. Their goal: to raise funds to find a cure for Diabetes.

The Ride

This international cycling event will challenge each rider to survive the mountainous elevation and climbs along the Icefields Parkway in Jasper National Park. The Icefields Parkway ranks as one of the world’s most spectacular mountain highways, with its unending succession of huge peaks, immense glaciers, iridescent lakes, wild-flower meadows, wildlife and forests. Cyclists will think they have gone to heaven in the Jasper National Park. The Icefields Parkway is considered one of the finest rides in the world!

The Plan

The team will fly into Edmonton, Canada (the birthplace of the discovery of successful islet cell transplantation by JDRF researchers). Here the group will stay overnight on Saturday, August 23rd, and have the great opportunity to hear from one of the JDRF researchers from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada regarding the success of the Edmonton Protocol. On Sunday they will travel by motor coach to the town of Jasper. The ride will take place on Monday, August 25th, and the team will return home on Tuesday, August 26th. All arrangements and expenses are handled by JDRF and Wheel & Sprocket.

The Reason

Net proceeds from the “Canadian Rockies Challenge” will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). JDRF’s mission is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. JDRF is the most efficient organization of its kind giving more than 85% of all funds to research. Since its inception in 1970, JDRF has given over $1.6 Billion to fund research for the cure for type 1-diabetes.
